Annual check-up

An honest check-up is not a package of every test the lab sells. The evidence on general health checks is clear and slightly uncomfortable: broad screening of healthy adults does not reduce deaths, while a small number of targeted checks — blood pressure, blood glucose, lipids, weight, and the age-appropriate cancer screens — genuinely do. So what you get here is the short list that changes outcomes, chosen for your age, family history and risk, and an explanation of why the rest was left out.

When it cannot wait

Signs that mean today

These are not reasons to book an appointment. They are reasons to be seen now, or to call an ambulance on 123.

  • Do not save these for a check-up: chest pain on exertion, breathlessness that is new, or fainting.
  • Unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or a lump anywhere that is new or growing.
  • Blood anywhere it should not be — in urine, in stool, when coughing, or bleeding after the menopause.
  • Thoughts of harming yourself. That is an appointment today, not a line on a form.

When to book

Reasons to be seen

  • You have never had your blood pressure, sugar or cholesterol measured as an adult, or it has been more than three years.
  • A parent or sibling has diabetes, heart disease before 60, or breast or bowel cancer — that moves both what we test and when we start.
  • You need a fitness-to-work, pre-employment, sports or visa medical.
  • Something is nagging at you that never quite justifies its own appointment — tiredness, weight, sleep, mood, alcohol, a habit you want to change.

Annual check-up in Egypt

15.5%
of Egyptian adults have raised blood glucoseRaised blood glucose has no symptoms for years. A single blood test finds it, and finding it early is what keeps eyes, kidneys and feet intact.Source: Egypt STEPS survey, ages 15–69 (WHO, Ministry of Health and Population, CAPMAS), 2017
≈3 in 10
Egyptian adults live with high blood pressureRecent national estimates cluster around 29–30%, though studies range widely. High blood pressure causes no symptoms until it causes damage — a two-minute measurement is the whole test.Source: Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal, WHO EMRO, 2022
35.7%
of Egyptian adults are living with obesityWeight is the single biggest driver of the diabetes and blood-pressure numbers on this page — and the one most open to change with steady, unglamorous support.Source: Egypt STEPS survey, ages 15–69 (WHO, Ministry of Health and Population, CAPMAS), 2017
22.7%
of Egyptian adults currently use tobaccoSmoking is behind most of the repeat chest infections a family doctor sees, and behind the cough that turns out to be something else.Source: Egypt STEPS survey, ages 15–69 (WHO, Ministry of Health and Population, CAPMAS), 2017
90.3%
of Egyptian adults eat fewer than five servings of fruit and vegetables a dayNine in ten. This is not a personal failing — it is what the country eats, and it is why a doctor talks about food at an ordinary check-up.Source: Egypt STEPS survey, ages 15–69 (WHO, Ministry of Health and Population, CAPMAS), 2017
87% / 93%
of Egyptians with hepatitis C were diagnosed, and 93% of those were treatedEgypt was the first country in the world to reach WHO's gold tier on the path to eliminating hepatitis C. It is the clearest proof available that screening a whole population actually works.Source: World Health Organization, 2023

What a visit looks like

What a visit for this involves

  • 25–30 minutesClinic visitAt the clinic, unhurried
  • 20 minutesVideo consultationFrom anywhere in Egypt
  • 15 minutesFollow-upAfter a recent visit, same complaint

In the room

What the doctor checks

  1. Blood pressure taken properly, weight, waist and BMI — plainly, without judgement, because in Egypt these are the numbers driving most of the disease we treat.
  2. A short, targeted blood panel: glucose or HbA1c, lipids, kidney function, and a full blood count. Extras only where your history justifies them.
  3. Hepatitis C testing if you have never been screened — Egypt's national programme reached WHO's gold tier precisely because screening people who felt entirely well worked.
  4. The screening that fits your age and sex — breast, cervical, bowel — and the vaccines you are due, both of which are usually where a check-up actually earns its cost.

Come prepared

What to bring

  • Any results from the last three years, including from a workplace or an initiative screening — comparison over time is worth more than a fresh set of numbers.
  • A list of what your parents and siblings have been diagnosed with, and at what age.
  • The two or three questions you actually want answered. Say them at the start, not at the door.

Next step

Tell us what's happening and we'll arrange the right kind of visit.

Message the clinic on WhatsApp. We reply with the times that are free and what the visit costs, before you agree to anything.

At home

Between visits

  • One change, kept, beats five started. Pick the one that is realistic this year and we will build the next visit around whether it held.
  • Nine in ten Egyptian adults eat fewer than five servings of fruit and vegetables a day. That is a national pattern, not a personal failing, and it is the single most movable thing on most people's list.
  • Keep your own copy of every result. The most useful thing at your next check-up is what your numbers were at this one.
